Inside the PDF you'll find

  • Letter to Parents

Each FOSS module includes a letter to parents to tell you what your child will be doing in the investigations at school and to share ways that you can develop your child's scientific interests at home.

  • Home/School Connections

There are many ways to extend your child's science experiences at home and to have fun together. We have developed a Home/School Connection for each of the four investigations in the Pebbles, Sand, and Silt Module. These require little or no materials from home. Young children will need a parent, grandparent, or a big brother or sister to help read the directions and play along. Check them out!

    Investigation 1: First Rocks—Invent a rock game!
    Investigation 2: River Rocks—Play I Spy!
Investigation 3: Using Rocks—Go on a neighborhood field trip!
Investigation 4: Soil Explorations—Do perc tests on local soils!

Each of the Home/School Connections is just a start—follow your curiosity and the possibilities for discovery are never ending!

  • Math Extensions

Math and science go hand in hand. Each Pebbles, Sand, and Silt investigation comes with two math extensions for use at home or school. These give students an important opportunity to connect their new scientific vocabulary and concepts to their developing math skills.

Math Extension A was developed with first-grade math standards in mind, while Extension B is more suitable for second-grade levels.

    Investigation 1: First Rocks

    1. Sort rocks and construct number sentences.
    2. Write a story problem about rocks.

    Investigation 2: River Rocks

    1. Create a graph.
    2. Count your coins to buy rock gifts.

    Investigation 3: Using Rocks

    1. It's a brick-making party! How many materials will you need?
    2. Plan a wall of bricks.

    Investigation 4: Soil Explorations

    1. Rock addition, subtraction, and early multiplication.
