Ilmenite is a mineral that is found in igneous rocks that form in an underground magma, in some metamorphic rocks, and often in beach sand. It is brittle and doesn´t form good crystals. It may be very weakly magnetic. It is an iron and titanium oxide. This photograph is of magnetite, an iron oxide. Magnetite can be separated from ilmenite in beach sand because it is magnetic.
