Setting up your browser: QuickTime plug-in

Video features of the FOSS Populations and Ecosystems multimedia require that your web browser have the QuickTime Player plug-in, version 3 or later. It's free, provided on the CD-ROM or online, and supported by Apple: http://www.apple.com.

Videos are in the Organism Database and the larkey menu. If you have difficulty viewing them, please review this page.

QuickTime plug-in detector

Do you see something here?
 Version 3 or later of the QuickTime Player plug-in is required.
  • If you do not see a message, or
  • if you see the Windows Media Player Icon (Windows Media Player will try to play the movie but will often fail),

you should install the QuickTime plug-in.

Installing the QuickTime Player plug-in

Version 6 of the QuickTime plug-in on the CD-ROM will show videos in the FOSS Populations and Ecosystems multimedia, although it may not be the most recent version. Installing from the CD-ROM (about 5 minutes) will be quicker and simpler than Internet installation over a dial-up connection (about 30 minutes).

We do not support the QuickTime plug-in. If you have questions about installation or other features, contact Apple at http://www.apple.com/support.

Once the installation is complete, return to the FOSS Populations and Ecosystems multimedia and click Check Browser to make sure your browser has all the necessary plug-ins.

From the CD-ROM

An installer for QuickTime 6 is in the Installers folder on the FOSS Populations and Ecosystems CD-ROM.

Macintosh. Double-click the FOSS_PE icon on your desktop. When the main window opens, double-click the Installers folder. Open the QuickTime 6 for Mac folder. Open the folder for your operating system, and double-click the QuickTime Installer icon.

PC. Double-click My Computer. Right-click on the CD-ROM drive where FOSS_PE is located. Choose Explore from the menu. Double-click Installers, then double-click Quicktime 6 for PC and open QuickTimeInstaller.exe to start the installation.
