Delta Education will host a one-day FOSS Institute for middle school, for educators from districts that have implemented FOSS or are planning to implement FOSS. The Institute will focus on the Planetary Science Second Edition for Middle School. The Institute is designed for experienced FOSS educators—lead teachers, administrators, curriculum coordinators, professional developers, and university methods instructors.

Join FOSS developers to learn about the new FOSS Elementary Program. Find out how FOSS will help schools address the next-generation science standards. We’ll introduce the new instructional design based on learning progressions, and illustrate how the system incorporates science-centered language development, outdoor experiences, notebooks, digital resources, and formative assessments into the learning experience.

This session will also demonstrate how to integrate new technology elements in the classroom to support student learning.

Active learning requires active thinking and thinking involves language. Discover the ways language is used to help students make sense of their active-learning FOSS experiences. We will model a FOSS investigation using listening and speaking, reading and writing, and language-development strategies to further content knowledge, scientific practices, and academic literacy.

Out of this World! Planetary Science for Middle School

How have we come to understand the solar system? How many other planetary systems are there and how can we find and explore them? Students investigate these questions and more in the revised FOSS Planetary Science Course. This Second Edition introduction will highlight new features, strategies, content, and materials.

Learn how we implement science notebooks in K-8 FOSS classrooms. Through active investigations from the new editions, you’ll discover how science notebooks impact student achievement by providing a tool for developing conceptual understanding, exposing evidence of learning, and guiding instruction. Sample materials will be distributed.
