A huge sunspot group seen on March 3, 2001. This group is more than 13 times larger than the surface of Earth. The largest solar flare recorded in 25 years erupted from this sunspot group. Sunspots are caused when intense magnetic fields erupt from inside the Sun. They appear dark because they are slightly cooler than the Sun's surface, or photosphere.
