Reddish spots and shallow pits pepper the icy surface of Europa. These pits may be the result of warmer ice bubbling up though the colder icy shell around Europa. Data suggest that there is a deep melted water ocean beneath the ice layer. The red color may hold clues to the composition of the ocean and to whether it could support life.
