This photograph of the western Mediterranean Sea and the Strait of Gibraltar was taken near sunset. Because of the low solar angle tidally-generated wave sets can be seen. The older set (labeled) contains at least 14 waves. A younger set is forming near the middle of the strait. Bright areas in Spain and Morocco are rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. The photo was taken by a space shuttle astronaut aboard STS-98.
