The Larson Ice Shelf is a large, floating ice mass on the eastern side of the Antarctic Penisula. In a 35-day period beginning on January 31, 2002 about 3,250 square kilometers of the shelf disintegrated and sent thousands of icebers adrift into the Weddell Sea. Over the next five years the shelf lost a total of 5,700 square kilometers, about 60% of its previous extent. The Antarctic ice shelves are thick plates of floating ice fed by Antarctic continental glaciers.
