The Module Matrix is a two-page, concise summary of the module activities, investigation by investigation. The categories include: synopses of the investigations...California content and investigation and experimentation standards... science concepts... reading and writing opportunities... and assessment activities. All of the content and investigation standards addressed in the module are listed on page 4. In this guided tour we will follow physical science standard PS1b. The science lessons are presented in several major conceptual chunks called investigations. The first investigation starts on page 37. The CA standards addressed in each investigation are listed on the first page of the investigation. As you can see, content standard PS1b is not addressed in Investigation 1. To find where PS1b is taught we will turn ahead to Investigation 4. Investigation 4 starts on page 141. A quick glance at the California Science Standards section confirms that PS1b is addressed in this investigation. The next two pages are the At-A-Glance chart, which shows how the investigation is subdivided into parts. The At-A-Glance chart summarizes the activities in each part... provides a teaching schedule... and points out the standards addressed in each part. As you can see, standard PS1b is addressed in all four parts of Investigation 4. We are now flipping ahead to the start of the step-by-step lesson plan for Part 1 of Investigation 4. This is where the active investigation of PS1b begins. The standard is stated in the sidebar as a reminder. After completing the work with materials, the teacher conducts a wrap-up discussion. During wrap-up the teacher reinforces the vocabulary associated with the standards... and adds new words to the class word bank. The major concepts that contribute to understanding the standards are discussed and recorded on the What We Learned chart. At key places in the instructional flow, students read in their Science Resources books. The standard addressed in the reading is written in the sidebar as a reminder to the teacher, along with a snapshot of the first page. The article called Mix It Up is read after Part 2. Questions at the end of the article focus students’ thinking on concepts related to standard PS1b. Solids to Liquids and Back Again is read after Part 4. Again, questions call on students to think about concepts related to PS1b. The question mark icon indicates an assessment opportunity. This embedded assessment calls for a teacher observation. The teacher visits each group and asks students to describe how the properties of the solids are changing as a result of heat. This is a core concept in standard PS1b. PS1b is assessed again after students have observed margarine, chocolate, and ice in cups floating in hot water, and worked with bottles of liquid that have been in a freezer. The Assessment chapter provides guidance for monitoring and confirming student learning. Formative assessment strategies provide continuous information about student learning while teaching is occurring. A summative assessment is given at the conclusion of instruction. Three items assess student mastery of standard PS1b. The last page of the assessment chapter summarizes all of the formative assessment opportunities in the module... and the standards they assess. Teachers can quickly see that PS1b is assessed in all four parts of Investigation 4, and that student work on Science Notebook sheet no. 15 can be used for assessment purposes as well. The last chapter in the Teacher Guide is a checklist of CA standards for this module. The checklist helps teachers make sure they address all of the standards and provides a convenient mechanism for checking off the date the standard was covered. Standard PS1b is covered in all four parts of Investigation 4. This ends the show-me tour.
