12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19 The Module Overview provides the big picture of the module. Page 1 has a list of the goals of the module and a table of contents. All of the content and investigation standards addressed in the module are listed on pages 2 and 3. In this guided tour we will follow physical science standard PS1b. The module matrix is a two-page, concise summary of the module activities investigation by investigation. The categories include: synopses of the investigations, content standards, investigation and experimentation standards, science concepts, reading and writing opportunities, and assessment activities. PS1b is addressed in Investigation 1, The Force. We will now flip ahead in the Teacher Guide to the first page of The Force. Note that our place in the Teacher Guide or Science Resources book is always displayed in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. The CA standards addressed in the investigation are listed on the first page of the investigation. The next two pages show the At-a Glance chart, which divides the investigation into its parts to provide further lesson details and a teaching schedule. Flipping ahead to Part 4 of Investigation 1 we see where the active investigation of PS1b begins. The standard is written in the sidebar as a reminder. The question mark icon indicates an assessment opportunity. Here students record data and answer questions on Science Notebook sheet no. 7. Guidance for assessing the student work on Science Notebook sheet no. 7 is found in the Embedded Assessment chapter. The standard being assessed is restated in the sidebar and the narrative discusses what to look for in the student work. Samples of complete answers to the questions are provided. Embedded assessments are used diagnostically throughout the module to monitor learning. They are meant to be a learning tool to help your students dig deeper into their understanding of science. Assessment is an integral part of instruction. The last page of the Embedded Assessment chapter shows all of the embedded (and benchmark) assessment opportunities in the module. After wrapping up the active investigation, students read in their Science Resources books. The standard addressed in the reading is called out in the sidebar of the Teacher Guide. The standard addressed in the article is stated on the first page of the article above the title. Review questions at the end of the reading call on students to think about the standard-related discussions in it. At the end of each investigation, students read a summary article. Questions at the end of the summary article call on students to integrate experiences from the active investigation with information from the readings. The standards addressed and the new vocabulary introduced in the investigation are included for student reference. Reading the summary article and discussing the associated questions marks the conclusion of each investigation. Benchmark assessments (I-Checks) are given at the end of each investigation to provide information about student understanding of the standards for both teachers and students. The last chapter in the teacher guide is a checklist of CA standards for all grade-level standards. The checklist helps teachers make sure they address all of the standards and provides a convenient mechanism for checking off the date the standard was covered. This ends the show-me tour.
